So this year Cody and Matt had been talking so much Street Fighter trash that they decided to dress up as Ryu and Ken and do battle. They invited anyone else that wanted to dress up as a Street Fighter character to join the nerd fun. I said I’d go as Blanka. The costume was easy enough… green body paint, orange wig, and chest hair. The fun part was later when I was trying to get the chest hair off after using too much eyelash glue to keep it stuck on.
Before Halloween there were quite a few parties this year and you can check out some of the wacky pics at the bottom. I wasn’t about to cover myself in green paint three nights in a row, so I had to find something else that was quick and easy. My brother was chewing me out because I wasn’t going to get dressed up for any of the parties and that’s when I noticed my new UCI sweater.
And here’s why I can never run for public office. At the time it was in response to people giving me such a hard time about being white and going to a school that was mostly Asian. I remembered that Costume Castle still sold these incredibly racist “Chop Suey Glasses” that must have been left over from the ‘40s. I grabbed some yellow buckteeth to make it as offensive as possible and was off.
Also, at the time, my girlfriend of eleven years was Asian, and one of the parties I was going to was for a friend’s birthday that was Asian. I can’t speak for them, I’m sure they thought I was being an obnoxious ass, but in my weird way it felt like I was part of a joke than making fun of someone else. It was meant to be as outrageous and ridiculous as possible.
Would I do it now? No. I want you to know that I’m not celebrating it by having it here, but I’m also not hiding from it, and pretending it didn’t happen, by taking it down.
